Phosphate Systems

Zinc, manganese, and iron phosphate systems, with the cleaners, inhibitors, and sealer that complete each line.

Zinc Phosphate

When the corrosion resistance of finished parts or lubricity of components must be especially high, zinc phosphatizing is the preferred conversion coating. The desired result will dictate the type of zinc phosphate to be used. Zinc phosphate coatings can be very coarse when formulated to produce large zinc crystalline structures on the substrate, or quite smooth when formulated for fine zinc crystals. Large and medium crystalline zinc is typically associated with products where lubricity or "Make and Break" is of the utmost importance, whereas fine zinc crystalline coatings make an excellent corrosion resistant base for finishes such as liquid or powder paints.

Zinc phosphatizing is often used by aerospace manufacturers and the military for equipment that may be exposed to severe environments. Zinc phosphates are also widely used in the automotive industry, the appliance and electronics industries, and the oil and gas industry.

Crest zinc phosphate solutions are designed to uniformly deliver zinc coatings with large, medium, or fine crystals with consistent coating weight from 1500 to 3500 mg/psf. The size and weight of the zinc phosphate coating is dependent upon the formulation of the zinc phosphate chemical solution, time in solution, and the substrate.

Cleaner: Liquid Rust Remover NF. Oil and rust inhibitor: PRP-5 and PRP-6.

Manganese Phosphate

Manganese phosphate coatings are known for having the highest hardness, superior corrosion protection, and maximum wear resistance of general phosphate coatings. It is extensively used to improve the sliding properties of ferrous surfaces. The use of manganese phosphate coatings for improved corrosion resistance can be found in virtually all branches of the metal-working industry.

Because of its superior wear protection properties, manganese phosphate coatings are widely used in industry. They can be found in the oil and gas industry, aerospace industry, on gears and bearings, marine equipment, in engines, on firearms, fasteners of all types, and much more.

Manganese phosphatizing is one of the more costly metal pretreatments that is routinely used, as well as one of the most effective. Its finish is black to dark grey in color, very smooth to the touch, and typically represents the desired finish. Components that have been manganese phosphatized may also be immersed in a lubricant bath and allowed to dry to further corrosion resistance and wear protection.

Crest offers both a traditional manganese phosphate and a hybrid zinc-manganese phosphate. Both of the Crest manganese phosphate products produce superior finish results when used according to the recommended application practices and routinely get consistent coating weights of 3500 to 5000 mg/psf.

Cleaner: Liquid Rust Remover NF. Oil and rust inhibitor: PRP-5 and PRP-6.

Iron Phosphate

Iron phosphate is the most common metal pretreatment for both indoor and outdoor applications. Crest iron phosphate coating chemicals are easy and inexpensive to use, and deliver a quality foundation upon which to apply a finish such as a liquid paint or powder coating.

Iron phosphatizing will typically leave a bluish iridescent appearance to a clean ferrous substrate. Crest's iron phosphate solutions are formulated to produce a uniform phosphatized surface with coating weights consistently ranging from 35 to 50 mg/psf. Higher iron phosphate coating weights can be achieved when specific conditions are met such as time in solution, alloy type, and chemical etching or media blasting the substrate prior to being introduced to the iron phosphate chemical solution.

Several of the Crest iron phosphate chemicals contain cleaning agents which allow them to be used as a cleaner and phosphate in one step. They can also be an additional cleaning agent within the iron phosphate process line to assure a clean part and therefore the maximum iron phosphate coating possible. These Crest cleaner-phosphate solutions are formulated with wetting agents engineered to effectively remove oils and grease commonly associated with metal processing, but will react to almost any organic contaminant.

Crest iron phosphate chemicals are available in both liquid and powder solutions to give our clients more options on controlling concentration and ease of use. Each iron phosphate that Crest produces, whether liquid or powder, is formulated with premium ingredients to produce the highest level of chemical pretreatment and consistency possible.

Cleaners: PAC-42A, PAC-48, PAC-52, and Aluminum Cleaner AT. Sealer: Inhibiseal.
